We only have one crew member on each truck. This person must have an HGV or PSV licence, and show a good mechanical aptitude. They will also need exceptional organisational skills, be a definite people person and show good leadership and delegation skills.
The job requires you to be hard working, motivated, personable and above all else happy! It is a hard job and takes a lot of energy, physically, mentally and emotionally.
The main part of the job is the driving. This also includes the daily checks of the truck, general maintenance and the ability to see your way through any problems that may arise. This can be anything from a puncture to a broken hub seal, being stuck in mud or up to your axles in sand.
Being able to see the funny side of the situation and also a solution is a must, and in a group of 20 people all giving you their opinions it can be a test of character indeed. You will need to be focused on your ideas and see them through to fruition.
As well as maintaining the truck you will need to ensure that all the truck’s equipment stays clean and in good working order. This includes the tents that the passengers use to the kitchen and of course the tools for the truck.
Although on our trips all the side trips are optional extras, it is up to you to keep the clients informed of what is available, and have a continually updated list of where and how much. There are many companies that offer the same services in many places so it is up to you to give unbiased information and let the client decide. Knowledge of the countries you are travelling through and the flora and fauna, is handy, but this you will gain along the way.
You will need a little cooking ability and know how to cook on a fire and for large groups of people. You show them how to do it and then let the cooking competition begin. You show them well at the beginning and they will give you good food all the way!
We will give you training on the road with an experienced driver, but there will be times where you are thrown in at the deep end, so you will need to be able to cope with a map, a truck and a group of people, but after all, isn’t that what it’s all about?
If you think you are up for the challenge, then send in your CV, with a covering letter and a list of references and we’ll take it from there.
See you on the road....... sales@africantrails.co.uk
