At 4,566m high, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second highest mountain but 1,000 meters lower than Kilimanjaro. Meru is also a free standing active volcano with great views and wildlife.  The last very small output of lava was over a hundred years ago. 

For those who don’t want to camp, the Marangu route has accommodation in huts. It’s the shortest and cheapest route, but less time to acclimatize, therefore lower success rate to the summit that other longer routes

The  Machame expedition offers the best chance to acclimatise due to its length and the ascent and descent over the duration of the expedition. The route takes in some of the most famous geological features on the mountain.

The Rongai route offers the best chance to experience the wildlife surrounding Kilimanjaro and it is one of the quietest routes on the mountain
